Letter to the Congregation
15 March 2020
Dear Members and Friends of Christ,
The Church Council made the decision to suspend Sunday morning worship gatherings for Sunday March 22 and March 29. It is hoped we will return on Sunday April 5, Palm Sunday, but that will depend on circumstances at that time, and a decision will be made early in the week prior to April 5. The church office will also be closed. Many of our renter groups have cancelled or postponed their gatherings.
This decision is made not out of fear or panic, but out of a sense of responsibility and care for not only our membership, but for our wider community.
I recognize not everyone at Christ Lutheran would agree that cancelling a Sunday worship service is the appropriate action, for historical, theological or other reasons. It is a difficult decision for all of us. We are all in new territory here. However, at the end of the day, a strong sense expressed by our membership, council and myself is that we listen to the medical and public health authorities, seek a tangible way to “love our neighbour as we love God and self”, and join our sisters and brothers in Christ in the Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic, Mennonite and other churches, in suspending Sunday public gatherings. We do so with the hopes of “getting ahead” of the virus, slowing its spread, bringing ease to our health care system, and doing what we can to care for the most vulnerable in our community, notably our elders. Hopefully, if we can “nip this in the bud”, the virus will move through our region over the next couple of weeks with as few damaging effects as possible.
In the meantime, we ask that, over the next two weeks, you remember to go on-line to Facebook, to “Christ Church - Waterloo”, and watch what will be posted there. There will be scripture readings, prayers, reflections, music, as well as announcements. In this way, we will gather “virtually” as a community of faith.
We also ask that you remember your offerings to the church. If you’re on PAR, that’s great. If not, might this be the time to sign up? You can mail in your offering, or contact Karen McRae, our Treasurer, (519-885-4050) to arrange a time you can come to the church to deliver it. The church continues to rely on your generous giving. Thank you so much.
Moreover, we ask that we pray for and keep in touch with our homebound elders, as well as those in our faith community who may be feeling out of sorts, experiencing loneliness, or feeling vulnerable during this time. If you become aware of anyone needing anything – groceries, a phone call – leave a message on the church phone (519-885-4050). Messages will be checked daily.
We hold all those around the world who have been made ill by this Coronavirus, or who’ve been affected by it in any way, as well as all frontline healthcare workers, in our prayers.
Blessings of Peace to you. God is with us!
